Our
objective is to assist eligible members to gain access to post secondary
education, and to graduate with the qualifications and skills needed
to pursue individual careers.
We want our students to succeed, however, since we usually have more
prospective students than we do funds, there are priority-criteria that
must be followed in order for selection to be fair. The Manager of Education
Services, approves applicants who have met all the criteria for eligibility
and the conditions of priority, for sponsorship. An Appeal Process is
in place to ensure fairness and equitable treatment under our existing
policy. Students may appeal assistance decisions to the Standing Committee
of Council for Education and Cultural Development, and further to the
Executive Director for the Algonquins of Pikwàkanagàn,
whose decision is final.
The ‘Standing Committee of Council for Education and Cultural
Development’ is a committee consisting of community members, staff,
and Council representatives who develop and recommend to Council effective
and fair programming within the Education Department of the Algonquins
of Pikwàkanagàn.
Our department’s staff provides counseling services to our elementary
and secondary students to help them choose their course of study wisely,
and to post-secondary students to help them succeed in achieving their
goals.
Post Secondary Counselling
Success in Post Secondary studies is of great concern to Chief and Council.
In order to improve a student's ability to succeed at this level, and
eventually to become an important contributing member of our community,
the department of Education Services was directed to provide counseling
assistance.
Prior to enrollment in a college/university, we can offer guidance in
career selection. To do so, we may encourage a student to investigate
their own skills, interests, and abilities before deciding what path
to take. In addition, we will be able to provide current, relevant career
information, which will be obtained by maintaining close links with
appropriate facilities, by collecting other appropriate resource materials,
and by observing job market trends.
The counsellor will ensure that a student understands the criteria for
local sponsorship and will provide information on alternative sources
of funding for students, including scholarships and bursaries. But the
main responsibility for the counsellor will be spending time communicating
with the student, by phone, and by email, and travelling within the
Province of Ontario, as and when required by the job and in consultation
with the Manager of Education Services, in order to determine their
progression along their chosen path. In this way, we can help them get
whatever support is needed in order to get back on the right track.
