The
Pikwàkanagàn Fire Rescue Department is made up of a dedicated
group of volunteer Firefighters. The department provides fire protection
to the community. They are also a part of the Renfrew County mutual aid
system, which provides fire protection to the surrounding townships when
requested.
A large majority of the department members, with the exception of new
recruits, have received training through the Ontario Native Fire Fighters
Society. In addition, the department has been sending members for training
and certification at the Ontario Firefighters College in Gravenhurst,
Ontario. The Ontario Fire College is a provincial institution providing
fire training for members of fire departments in Ontario. It is operated
by the Office of the Fire Marshal.
The
Pikwàkanagàn Fire Rescue Department has two pumper trucks
and a rescue van. One pumper functions as a tanker to carry the water,
while the other pumper is used to suppress the fire. A Snuffer is located
on the back of the pumper. The Snuffer is a foam unit which is ideal for
automobile fires. This unit uses a mixture of air, water and a foaming
solution to smother the fire. The Snuffer uses a fraction of the water
customarily used with a direct water line from the truck. The rescue van
carries all the equipment necessary for fire fighting including ventilation
fans, generators, volume pumps, SCBAs, Jaws of Life and other tools and
equipment.
The fire
department has an inventory of fire fighting equipment and tools necessary
for shore based water and ice rescue. They also have variety of fire suppression
and auto extraction equipment. Included is the Cascade system which includes
a compressor and reserve bottles. This unit is used to refill the air
bottles on the self contained breathing apparatus (SCBA). The filtered
air is compressed to 4500 lbs.
Fire
and rescue training includes First Aid and CPR (through St. John Ambulance),
First Response including defibrillator, water ice rescue, auto extraction,
hazardous materials, Emergency Response, officer training courses, Module
A firefighter and fire suppression.
