Pikwakanagan members harvest moose for food—not for sport. There are rules and regulations all harvesters must abide by to conserve the moose population.
Conservation and safety is the highest priority in the implementation of the Harvest Management Plan for the Moose and Deer hunt inside Algonquin Provincial Park and outside the park.
All Pikwakanagan members must carry their status card at all times and must stop for Pikwakanagan monitors when entering and exiting. This ensures people can be contacted in case of an emergency and also to record harvest activities.
The sustainable harvest number for adult moose is provided by the Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR). However, Pikwakanagan manages their own harvest with agreements to work in conjunction with MNR to allocate the total harvest numbers. This includes participating in aerial park surveys to gather information to assist in our sustainable system of harvest.
A draw is held each year for the distribution of the adult bull and cow tags. All moose tags provided are compliance with the Algonquin Moose Harvest Management Plan.
A Special Permit for hunting may be granted to those with certain physical disabilities. Special permits will be authorized by Chief and Council.
Harvesting is permitted within Algonquin Territory.
Moose Season Dates
Harvesting inside Algonquin Park for moose shall begin in October, the Tuesday following Thanksgiving Day of each year.
Adult Bull, October to January 15
Cow, October to December 20
Calf, October to January 15
Harvesting will be shut down inside and outside of the park after quotas have been reached.

Inside Algonquin Park: Begins in October, Tuesday following Thanksgiving Day and remains open until January 15.
Outside Algonquin Park: Begins September 1 and closes January 15.
